Poker Players Alliance Loses Argument in Court
Poker Players Alliance Loses Argument in Court
November 11th, 2011
This week, the American Poker Players Alliance unsuccessfully tried to convince a judge that poker is a game of skill. The PPA in a case tried to defend Charles Daniels, a poker hall owner from Portsmouth, Virginia.
In order to defend its claim, the Poker Players Alliance called upon World Poker Champion Greg Raymer who testified that poker is indeed a game of skill and not a game of luck. Unfortunately the judge was not completely convinced by the arguments.
At the end of the process, the judge indeed accepted that poker does contain elements of skill, but argued that they are not that significant in order overweight the element of random and luck. With this case many experts believe that the argument that poker is game of skill failed to achieve any results and can't be used anymore in aiding the online poker legalization process.
The PPA knowing that it's extremely difficult in the US to pass a law that would legalize online poker instead tried to convince the public opinion and legislators that poker is not a game of luck and the current laws that prohibit online gambling can't be used in this case.
Now, only one option remains, namely to convince legislators that legalizing online poker is not a danger to society, and more than this, it has several positive effects. One of these positive sides of online poker legalization would be that US states would be able to cash in a lot of needed income in form of taxes. This is one of the main arguments used by proponents of the legalization process.
Some states did already realize the benefits of online poker legalization, but are reluctant to take the first step and enact such a law. Many online poker enthusiasts hope that the US federal legislative will soon enact a law that will legalize online poker in the whole of the US.
